Artificial intelligence (AI) allows users to process more data and make faster decisions. AI automates tasks which were previously the sole domain of humans, such as learning from experience, recognizing patterns and making predictions. AI and machine learning (ML) capabilities will undergird advancements in logistics, cyber capabilities, autonomous systems, healthcare and many other fields across the civilian and military domains. Military uses are almost limitless; near-term applications include superior reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence-gathering. It is imperative that the U.S., together with industry, academia and its international partners, lead the development and adoption of trustworthy, secure, ethical and accountable AI.
